Authentication trouble

i've been having trouble with authentication since i first downloaded vent, but now i cant seem to get it to work at all. i have been trying to connect via a new server and keep getting the same message. "connected to server but unable to authenticate the specified user/password"
i have checked the server info/password several times, reinstalled vent, and restarted comp as well, all to no avail.
any advice would be appreciated; thanks in advance. -otis
