Computer illiterate: problems with in game communication

So I've connected to the server i want to connect to and set my hotkey. I can speak to people when i am out of game and the vent window is selected. If i minimize vent and click back into cod4 I can hear everyone else but they cannot hear me. So obviously I've missed something very obvious and important. Something with binds maybe? I don't really know what a bind means btw
