speex codec issues

I am really enjoying my new Macbook Pro but when i installed ventrilo i could not talk. I went into setup and changed the codec to speex. it tested fine and so i hit ok. once i went back to the main menu still nothing. i went back into setup and it had changed back to the GSM 6.10. I can't get it to stay on speex. am i doing something wrong or what?

the vent client must use the codec that is specified on the server side. contact the server owner and have them setup the server to use the speex codec instead of gsm. the speex codec is supported by both the windows and mac client. it only takes 5 minutes to change the server but the owner has to do it from the hosting company's control panel.
