Speex Codec.

I'm new to ventrilo, because ventrilo is new to Mac. I was very excited to download this today, because I could finally communicate with guild mates on World of Warcraft. When logging onto my guilds ventrillo server, i get the message that there server uses GSM 6.10 codec not Speex. My guild said they were unable to change it to speex. Is speex inferior to GSM? could someone please explain why no one on WoW uses speex? thank you.
