Default "Unable to activate DirectSound for selected device"..?

Ever since I got this computer, it's been giving me some lame error and won't let me talk on Ventrilo.

This is the exact error I get every time I log into, or even modify my settings on Ventrilo:
"Unable to activate DirectSound for selected device.
DirectSoundCaptureCreate failed. HR=DSERR_NODRIVER. No sound driver is available for use
"

A friend told me that in a nutshell, Ventrilo doesn't realize I have speakers hooked up. This is impossible, considering I have a laptop with built-in speakers that can't be turned off, or unplugged.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, and apparently I have a Realtek sound card.

in vent setup/voice-binds-speech tabs, is the output device set to the name of the audio device? also try checking/unchecking 'use directsound'

try turning off ‘User Account Control’ located in Windows Control-Panel/User Accounts

None of these fixed my problem. It worked for 1 month and all of a sudden stopped working.
