Very odd connection problem

Ok so this is odd i have a lan network with no internet and i have the latest client and server installed i can start the server with no errors but i cant connect from any pc even the one hosting i have tried the loopbacks 127.0.0.1 and localhost and it will just sit on connecting however with an old vent version it will connect and give the wrong server version error and vent status shows the server as active anyone know whats wrong?

The server must have access to the Internet.

thats a shame, it didnt used too, guess i will have to look elsewhere for a lan alternative.
