There are a lot of concerns about the new Speex codec with my guild. The general opinion is that it is a poor codec and produces bad quality sound.
The second reason they have decided not to switch is due to everyone having to download a new client. The reason for this thread is that I'd like for those of you who have made the switch to report on your view of the audio quality differences and any hassles you may have experienced. Please don't hold back, give the bad with the good. My intention is to link the thread in my guild forums if the reports are mostly favorable to allay some of my guilds fears about switching. |

We ran codec tests a long time ago, so at first people were VERY apprehensive about the switch, and we tested it out one night with 4 people. We found little difference between GSM hi qual and Speex hi quality, so the admin switched it, and we didn't tell anyone til a week later and no one could tell that the codec had been changed.

The guild vent server was on GSM to start with but w/ me being a Mac user they decided to change it to Speex. The quality went UP! It sounded a lot better than before. Everyone (which is 50 people) liked the change to the Speex codec.

When they switched the codec for me, people thought it sounded as good if not better. Some people had worse quality (very few), but switching to the latest beta took care of it.
In short, there is no reason NOT to switch to Speex. |

to allow Mac users on with no problem in quality. Just make sure the codec and quality setting is equivalent. All our members did download the new beta windows client and a few had to tweak there sound output due to a squeal using a different codec that was easily fixed nothing major. All set now and nobody even thinks about it.

There also be even more sound improvements to the speex codec with the next couple beta releases and mac prototypes/betas.

I switched our server so our mac people could use. Mostly trouble free, except now one or two people I used to hear clearly now come across as static.

My guild switched over to the Speex codec about a week ago for Mac users.
No one noticed anything had changed. |
