Default Recomended System Specs/Bandwidth to host 8 man server

Basically I want to host my own server for a few friends for when we play Guild Wars. I have the server running and know how to do all that stuff but which codec would be best to use as I am running it on a medium spec desktop. I have 4MB broadband and just need some info on how to reduce lag and also which codec would be best to use as the default one is very poor quality. The server is running on a seperate pc but on the same network to what I am playing on if you get my point.

your upload bandwidth is the most important spec as the server has to replicate the xmission for each external user.

here are the network requirments - http://www.ventrilo.com/setup.php#Server_Network_Requirements

i would recommend starting with speex 3-20 but it's easy to adjust by changing the codec/format in the INI file then restarting the server. you can test sound quality by changing the format setting.

Are the GSM codecs not worth using then?

IMO, the GSM is OK but i like the sound quality of speex better.

also, the GSM only has 4 options to choose from:

0 0 GSM 6.10 (8 KHz, 16 bit) 1625 bytes/sec
0 1 GSM 6.10 (11 KHz, 16 bit) 2210 bytes/sec
0 2 GSM 6.10 (22 KHz, 16 bit) 4420 bytes/sec
0 3 GSM 6.10 (44 KHz, 16 bit) 8905 bytes/sec

Additionally, if you use Speex, you won't have to make any changes should a Mac user need to join your server at some point. If you use GSM, they'll be unable to join.
