Please explain how "status" works

The status page told me my Ventrilo server (on a Mac iBook with OS 10.4.11) was up and ready but nobody could connect to it from the outside (connections from the LAN were possible). As it turned out, the iBook's firewall was up (something I did not know) and prevented connections.

It is not clear to me how the status page can get all those data from the server that it shows us if the firewall is up and the ports 3784 and 6100 have not been opened.

Could someone from tech support please explain that?
