Default Vent quits on window close?

Hi all,

I am a long time Vent user but have been annoyed by a small quirk in the Mac version. When you close the Vent window it quits the app. With this kind of app it's not really what I expect in the Mac environment. Is it possible to update this to not close when I close the window and have it open back up when I click on the Vent icon in the Dock? That is more what I would say is standard in Mac land. I know I can hide the thing but I have never really liked hiding because the H key is much further than the W key lol.

Anyway, love Vent either way just wondering here.

Thanks.

So you are wanting the equiv of the Windows System Tray with a hidden main window?

Yes I think this would be very nice option, as I see now I came looking to see if it has been suggested yet. I am hosting my own server and was curious if you could make the vent serv window minimize to the system tray. Would clear up the clutter for gaming.

That's a really good observation; but, Vent is behaving in a way that is in accordance with Apple's Human Interface Guidelines. Here's the guideline from Apple:

"In most cases, applications that are not document-based should quit when the main window is closed. For Example, System Preferences quits if the user closes the window. If an application continues to perform some function when the main window is closed, however, it may be appropriate to leave it running when the main window is closed. For example, iTunes continues to play when the user closes the main window."

System Prefs, iPhoto and a number of other Apps quit when the main window is closed as the Application isn't doing anything else 'in the background'.

Hope that clarifies the behavior.

As far as minimizing the Vent window, either clicking the Yellow minimize button at the top left corner of the window or double clicking the title bar at the top of the vent window will minimize the window down into the dock. (Or press Command-M when the window is visible and in front).

I deal with that problem by just minimizing Ventrilo and then right clicking the Ventrilo icon in the dock, click hide and that's all =]

When I first log on I have a couple of seconds before it lags, then total silence. Once the lag catches up I hear ALL things said in vent within a span of 5-10 minutes all at once.

@miterreader

what version OSX are you running?
what make/model audio device are you using? does it require a driver?

after the buffered audio is cleared does it still lag?

We have experienced this issue as well - it was a couple of years ago but pretty freakish when everyones voice comes through at the same time.

After a lot of testing, it ended up actually being server lag due to a rapidly connecting and dropping connection. The Vent host switched us to a different server and the issue went away.

You may want to test it with a different Vent host - one of the free ones - to see if the issue is your Vent server company.

(and why are we in this thread about the Vent quitting when closing the window?)
