No incoming voice

I bought a Microsoft Lifechat LX-3000 and all sound works except for incoming voice from Ventrilo. All the alert sounds, changing channel, leaving, logging on work fine. All other sounds from other programs work fine as well, just no incoming voice.

in vent setup/voice-binds-speech tabs, is the output device set to enable 'use directsound' and the name set to lifechat?
