I host a freeware server for a small group of friends to use when we play online games together. The server is hosted on Windows, and is configured to use the speex codec. Players using the Windows client can hear and speak with one another. The one player who uses a Mac client can hear the others when they speak, but when he speaks the Windows clients just produce unintelligible buzzes, squeeks and squawks that don't sound remotely like speech. I am not a Mac user myself, so have no clue as to where even to suggest that he start looking in his set up. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any suggestions as to what might be causing the problem and how to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any replies. |

Nobody has reported any of these noises from me or any other mac users in our vent, but sometimes one of the windows users emits a loud electronic buzz-squawk that sounds like he was electrocuted when he speaks. It's only this one guy that happens to and it happens intermittently and is not a frequent thing - but he is using the windows client... so this isn't just a Mac thing.

Download the latest Ventrilo beta: 2.3.2.Beta.1
See if that fixes it maybe. |

If I use the Mac's built-in microphone, I can hear things just fine on the PC (using Windows client 2.3.0 or 2.3.2.Beta.1).
If I use my Bluetooth microphone (which works just fine with iChat), I sound like a squirrel when it comes out on the PC. The whole audio stream has been sped up. I noticed that my server is using Speex 16/16/5, not 9 like I've seen recommended elsewhere here. Is that likely to make a difference, given that it sounds fine using the internal mic? |

There seems to be an issue in the Mac client with the frequency that the microphone samples and the frequency that is encoded and broadcast. They're aware of the problem and will be addressing it shortly.

I am getting the squirrel voice syndrome, too.
Just had my guild change over from GSM to Speex for us Mac users. I can hear them absolutely fine, but whenever I talk, my voice is sped up very fast as if I was a chipmunk. I am using a Plantronics DSP USB headset. I have two of them, and tried both. Both produced the same sound error. |

Interesting tidbit guys!
Just strictly out of curiosity, I changed the settings in my "Speech" System Preferences. My microphone was being shown as Line In, so I changed it to my actual USB Microphone. Relaunch Ventrilo, and no more chipmunk! |
