Default Voice activation issue

Our team is considering switching to Ventrilo, but I'm having an issue with my microphone on my CM Sirus 5.1 USB headset.

I'm an old user of Ventrilo, so I know that i can monitor my mic output before I actually set the sensitivity value. Unfortunately, the lowest number I'm seeing under monitor is 98! It maxes out at about 102, or 103.

My monitor window reads something like this:

Abs Zero
Abs Zero
Abs Zero
Abs Zero
Abs Zero
Abs Zero
Abs Zero
Abs Zero
Abs Zero
Abs Zero
100 (<--speaking)
Abs Zero
Abs Zero
Abs Zero
Abs Zero
100 (<--speaking)
Abs Zero

Now, I use this same headset in Teamspeak and Raidcall, both on voice activation and have no issues with either.

When I set my sensitivity to 101, then I have to speak quite loudly to broadcast (test mode plays my broadcast back to me and its clear that my output volume level is sufficient). On the other hand, when i set my sensitivity to 100, my mic stays open all the time.

It seems I'm lacking the variability in mic level between 0 and 98 or 100 with my headset mic. Now when I switch Vent mic input source to my laptop built-in mic, the levels show properly, meaning, while quiet, the monitor levels are between 2 and 3, and as I speak the levels raise accordingly to between 30 to 60 as they should.

I have just downloaded the most recent driver for my headset, and this did not improve anything, Vent continues to react identically.

I have read other forums posts that seem like similar issues, however, in the posts I have read, disabling all effects have worked for some users (I have all effects disabled) and in another post I found, enabling Low Frequency Protection solved the problem, however I don't have this option, or if I do, I can't find where to enable it.

I'm looking forward to using Ventrilo, but I simply can't revert to push to talk when I haven't used it in years. I would like some help to figure this out. I'm sure someone here with more experience will be able to guide me in the right direction for a solution.

Thanx in advance.

first, try setting the sensitivity to 5. do not seto to 0 or 1 as that also leaves the mic on all the time. if the mic is too sensitive then increase the number by 1 or 2 and test again.

set the input device to enable 'use directsound' then set the name to Sirius mic.

set the outbound amplifier to 0.

you can also try setting the hardware mixer to the Sirius name then use the line volume slider to adjust the output.

is 'mic boost' enabled in the windows recording properties for the mic?
c-panel > sounds > recording tab > select mic > properties

what frequency does the mic use as the default? check the Sirius audio c-panel

If I set anything less then 101 sens, the mic stays open all the time.

set the input device to enable 'use directsound' then set the name to Sirius mic.
set the outbound amplifier to 0.

Both of these settings are as you have instructed. I didn't have to change anything.

you can also try setting the hardware mixer to the Sirius name then use the line volume slider to adjust the output.

The output level is fine, when i record and playback, sound quality is consistent and clear. There seems to be a problem with how ventrilo is evaluating my mic levels, it seems confused.

is 'mic boost' enabled in the windows recording properties for the mic?
c-panel > sounds > recording tab > select mic > properties

I have no mic boost option

what frequency does the mic use as the default? check the Sirius audio c-panel

2-channel 16bit 48000hz (dvd quality)

thanks.

I've never heard of the sensitivity reacting as you've seen so there might be some erronuous info given to vent. vent operates thru windows DirectX so let's start looking there.

in vent setup/voice-binds-speech tabs, set the output device name to sirius.

goto windows c-panel/sounds/playback & recording tabs and disable all unused devices:
rt-click in the window and select "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" > rt-click on all unused devices and select "disable"

then select the mic > properties > enhancement tab > select 'disable all sound effects'
goto the advanced tab > select the same frequency as the sirius c-panel is using

after those steps can you post the following plz:

Start > Run
Dxdiag

Click the 'Save All' button
File is saved to the desktop as "DxDiag.txt"
Copy/paste the information (up to, and including, the [PS/2 Devices] section) to the forum. The information might have to be separated into multiple posts due to the maximum character limitation.

Ok, here we go:

in vent setup/voice-binds-speech tabs, set the output device name to sirius.

goto windows c-panel/sounds/playback & recording tabs and disable all unused devices:
rt-click in the window and select "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" > rt-click on all unused devices and select "disable"

The above steps are complete.

then select the mic > properties > enhancement tab > select 'disable all sound effects'
goto the advanced tab > select the same frequency as the sirius c-panel is using

I have no sound effects available, and frequency remained unchanged because it was correctly set.

Nothing has changed in the reaction of the microphone in Ventrilo, the same problem prevails.

Following posts will contain the dxdiag information dump.
