i dont want to importunate anyone but,
we've got the same problem with my our BHD server. they won't change the codec to SPEEX, cause were not enough MAC users (and they have to download a beta version for that) so, i really understand them. The administrator there is real cool and open to upgrading things but says that it impossible for the moment. could you let us know if ventrilo is going to support the GSM 6.10 codec soon ? maskoshman |

As for downloading a new version, that's an excuse. They download a new version every time a new Windows version is released without a second thought. Quote:

Of course, then its 3 hours to try to sort people out with a host of newfound problems, plus you get to answer fun emails for at least a month about how the new codec sucks and it needs to be switched back. GSM doesnt work with the Mac client, but it is the (far) more reliable option for the windows client. |

And of course there are also people with Speex servers that are having no issues - just to present the other side.

so what i understand is that speex is a lot better, and
ventrilo didnt bother to make the mac version compatible with the gsm 6,10 codec... figuring that one day everyone will switch to speex. is that right ? it makes sense but... i still wish it would be compatible (a couples of buddies of mine (ON PC) are regulars on a black hawk down server...) and well...aah, humm...aaah, nevermind ![]() |

Think it's a tad shortsighted to say " ventrilo didnt bother to make the mac version" because the evidence of the mac prototypem blares to the contrary. It is my estimation that Flag decided to keep vent running on just one client platform whilst he was perfecting the program as a whole; would be easier to develop the app when only worrying about coding on one client to get the major bugs out the client/server operations. it also made sense to make use of the codec which was native to that platform at the time, i.e. GSM on windows. In time, when the development cycle of the mac client has progressed to an officail release, I think we can rest safe in the knowlege that there will be a satisfactory solution to let all clients sing and text-to-speech happily to one another thorugh various servers.
In my vision of the future, I hope that Flag will bring out an entire new version of server and client; one which does away with the GSM codec and only has cross platform alternatives (such as Speex) available so from default set-ups of servers, all clients can connect happily. |

(i almost never write in english, im a frenchman from montreal) cause sometimes the words i use might not be correct. when i said didnt bother i tought it was worthless cause everyone is eventually going to be using the speex codec. anyway, i'm all new at this. 2 weeks ago i didnt know ventrilo, i didnt even kwon that online gaming was possible for a mac owner ![]() |

Have the server administrator upgrade the server to 2.3 and change the Codec to Speex. Wade |
