Port Forwarding/Triggering Setup

Version: Ventrilo Client/Server 2.3
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition SP2
Router: Linksys Network Anywhere NR041

Goal: I have 3 computers on my network connected by a router (which in turn connects to the dsl modem). My goal is to open the ports on my router so I can run the ventrilo server from computer B (which is a computer rarely used) and connect from Computer A (which is the computer I'm on all the time when gaming).

Additional Information: With that being said, I've called Linksys (HELL!) 3 times trying to enable a static IP, disabling my DMZ, and opening port 3784. Computer B has the basic Windows Firewall which I tried disabling to get this working. (If I can get it working, I can configure the firewall later). I've used this detailed guide to try and enable the ports:

I think at this point, I need to sit down and try it again, call Linksys again *cries*, and try it again with what I know now. If more information is needed if you're willing to help, let me know. My ultimate goal is either keep the DMZ enabled for Computer A, or disable it totally and just go to port forwarding for ventrilo and all my other applications. I'm trying ventrilo because it's one of the programs I'm trying to enable this option and it's easy to find out if other people can connect or not.

Question 1: Do you have this same setup with having a secondary computer as the server and how did you accomplish it?

Question 2: Any input on my scenario or do you have the same router with the setup of what I'm trying to accomplish?

Yes. I'm running behind D-Link Router, 4 machines. I have an old Pentium Celeron that I use as a server computer that is always on. Ventrilo runs perfectly.

I accomplished it, by installing vent and following the directions. I did have to forward port 3784 to the right computer, but that was it.

Not the same router, but I thought I would try to help out. The actualy router shouldn't matter as long as you can forward ports, which you said you can.

The following section will work for anyone with Windows XP that wants or needs a static address.

Setting a static IP
Assuming that you are at [url="http://www.portforward.com/networkeverywhere/nr041-dhcp.jpg"]this screen[/url] on your router setup page, make sure that DCHP is on and check to see what your starting IP is and remember it. We will need it later.

Next, in Windows XP on the computer you plan to use Ventrilo on, go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections

Right click on "Local Area Connection" and then click properties. You will see a small list of things that look like:

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Don't worry if yours is different, it doesn't matter. Click once on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to select it and then click the "Properties" button.

Now this is the screen where the magic happens.
Instead of "Obtain an address automatically", you want to "Use the following IP address". In the following fields, input:

IP address: 192.168.1.x <--- pick any number you want to for x. Remember earlier when I told you to check your starting IP and remember it? Make the x any number that is below your starting IP.

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 <-- the IP of your router

NEXT STEP - You do not want to "Obtain DNS server address automatically", instead you want to "Use the following DNS server addresses" and input:

Preferred DNS server: 192.168.1.1 <--- once again your router address

Click OK and that computer now has a static address to whatever you set x to.

OK now, at [url="http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/NetworkEverywhere/NR041/NR0414.jpg"]this screen on your router setup page[/url], you will need to forward the 3784 port to your now static IP, on the machine you are running ventrilo.

Customized Applications: Any name you want
EXT Port: 3784, 3784 <--- 3784 in both boxes. Your ventrilo port.
Protocol TCP: Enable <--- Put a check here to enable
Protocol UDP: Enable or Disable. <--- I'm pretty sure you only need UDP if you plan to run status queries against the server. Try both if you have any problems. Otherwise leave unchecked.
IP Address: 192.168.1.x <--- whatever number you used for x goes here
Enable: Yes <-- actually enables the forwarding.. set to yes... duh

I reccomend to completely disable Windows Firewall on the machine you are running Ventrilo on. Also quit using DMZ. You essentially negate any security benefits of your router and leave that computer wide open to attacks.
