Mic only works first min

When I start up Ventrilo the mic and everything works but only for the first 30sec or so. After that when I try and talk people can only hear a ticking noise. I even tried just in to setup... in test the mic works but then when i try again its only the ticking. I don't understand why it would work at first and then stop working when settings don't change.
