Ventrilo constantly crashing

I have been having some issues with Vent. I can sign on, but as soon as I try and move to a different channel vent crashes. If I hit the reopen button I get this error message "HOME environment variable not found." I can be dragged into a different channel by the admin though. I am also having some issues with talking but I'm pretty sure that is my mic failing.
I was wondering if this is a common problem and if there is any way to fix it.

Edit: It is also crashing randomly, sometimes I will only be connected for a minute or two before it crashes, others I will be on for half an hour.
