Default Microphone Cutting Out & Huge Ping Spikes

I've been a Ventrilo user for years now and I've had no problem with it, until recently. I've run into a rather annoying/stressful problem that I cannot seem to fix. While I am leading my raid group on World of Warcraft, I will all of a sudden get huge ping spikes (5000-22000) on Vent, while everything else runs fine (WoW, Browsers, Etc). What makes the situation even worse is that when this happens, my microphone starts cutting out to the point where no one can understand a single word I am saying. This problem has never occurred before, so I don't quite understand what is going on. At first, I thought it was my server, but that doesn't seem to be the case as the same problem occurred on several different servers. I've tried resetting my server, my computer and my modem but nothing has helped. This problem has been a huge inconvenience for myself and my group. It is useless trying to lead a raid like this. I am begging for a solution!

are there any error messages in the vent log file? rt-clik in window/view/log file/scroll to bottom

what version of windows are you running? 32 or 64bit
same for vent
what brand audio device are you using?

try setting vent as shown here - http://forum.ventrilo.com/showthread.php?t=43879

Audio Driver

Check the Audio driver to make sure it is up to date. Or try re-installing the current driver.
(note: some USB Headsets do not require a driver)
(Don’t assume the driver is up to date as a newer one may have been released since the computer was built)

- If you have a brand-name PC, like Dell or HP, then check the manufacturers website for driver updates.
- If you built the PC and use the on-board sound device then check the motherboard manufacturers website for drivers for your model motherboard.
- If you use a plug-in soundcard, ex: SoundBlaster, then check that manufacturers website for drivers.

Also check for BIOS and chipset updates

When checking for BIOS, chipset and certain onboard hardware drivers, you should only check the pc (or specific motherboard) manufacturers website for your make/model. The manufacturer is responsible for maintaining the proper version of driver for their specific hardware.

For example: Realtek is an OEM manufacturer of audio chips and there are many different revisions of each. The latest driver found on the Realtek site may not be compatible with the version of chip in your pc, and could cause problems like 'stereo mix' to not be available. Realtek comments to this effect on their download page.

does your system have this installed?
Cyberlink Powercinema or PowerDVD

Vent lockup or lag

Nope, no error messages.

Windows 7, 32 bit & Ventrilo 3.0.5

I'm not 100% sure. Bought it at Walmart a year or so ago, and has worker fine ever since.

That is actually the settings that I've had for about a year or so now.

There was an update and I installed it. Did not change the problem, unfortunately.

Checked drivers for my model, they're all up to date.

I have a theory, and I have no clue if it could be accurate or not but I'll say it anyways. Everything was working fine, up until I downloaded an update that Windows recommended. I'll post the updates below!

Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2533523)

you can try uninstalling those 2 windows updates or doing a 'system restore'

just to be sure it's not a problem along the netpath to the vent server:

Perform a traceroute to the server when it happens and post the results:

start > run

cmd {hit enter}
tracert serverhostname(found in server setup)

(example: tracert frost.pure-voice.net )

Temporarily disable all firewall/virus/spyware/virus applications

Try powering off the modem-router-pc (in that order) for at least 60 seconds each (this will clear all cached data)

Try re-installing or updating the router firmware. Check the manufacturers website for your make/model

Factory Reset the Router - note: This will erase all settings that were manually changed. Record any manual changes before performing a reset. Suggest only performing this action as a last test.

In Windows Network Properties, disable all un-used network card ports (some cards include both wired and wireless ports)
Windows Control-Panel / network and sharing / manage network connection / right-click on the device(s) that aren't used and select 'disable'

In Windows Network Properties, try disabling QoS:
Windows XP Control-Panel / network and sharing / view status (link on right side) / properties / uncheck "QoS Packet Scheduler"
Windows 7 Control-Panel / network and sharing / Change adapter settings link / right-click on the adapter in use / Properties / uncheck "QoS Packet Scheduler"

Both updates have been uninstalled, and it seems that was not the problem.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The only persons ping that is affected on my ventrilo server is myself. Everyone else (9 other people) claims that their ping remains low (40-100). It seems like whenever I queue my mic, the ping jumps from 46 to anywhere from 1000-210000, then immediately jumps back down. This doesn't only happen on my server, but also every other server I've been on.

Temporarily disable all firewall/virus/spyware/virus applications
Disabled firewall and virus programs, problem still persists.

Quote:

Just tried this, but did not fix problem.

Quote:
Try re-installing or updating the router firmware. Check the manufacturers website for your make/model
Updating firmware is not possible unless cracked. Service provider (Bell) does not allow this. I've yet to power cycle the modem, though.

Quote:
Factory Reset the Router - note: This will erase all settings that were manually changed. Record any manual changes before performing a reset. Suggest only performing this action as a last test.
I'll perform this task right now and update you on the results.

Edit: This task did not fix the problem.

Followed steps to disabling QoS, problem still remains.

This issue is really starting to bother me. I use this program every single day, and I feel lost without it. I really don't know what I am going to do if this is not fixed by my next scheduled raid night (Wednesday).

in vent setup/misc tab, try setting 'process priority=high'

try disabling all other unused audio devices:

Disabling Audio Devices - Vista/Windows-7

Windows Control-Panel > Sound > Playback & Recording tabs > rt-click in the window and select "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" > rt-click on all unused devices and select "disable"

post the following if you the problem persists:

DXDIAG

Start > Run
Dxdiag
Click the 'Save All' button
