In System Preferences --> Sound --> Input, does your headset show up as an option?

If so, try selecting that as apposed to Line In =)

In my experience, headsets that plug into sound out ports don't work terribly well on a Mac -- I believe USB is the preferred way to go. I have a Logitech USB headset that works...
