Moose Jaw SK, using Shaw. Same problem here. It started about a month ago, having trouble connecting to vent, switching channels and talking. Ping is almost always >20000 yet once I get into a channel I can hear everyone fine, just can't talk. Behind a Lynksys router and my roommate uses Torrents. It is super annoying because I play alot of online games with a fairly large group of people on a vent server that I think is located in Chicago. Going to find out if anyone else around here has the same problem and if they are all using Shaw. Might have to switch ISP's if shaw is just going to say it's a problem on my side since it obviously isn't.

Koann 10-06-2008 08:53 PM

Might as well post here as well.
I'm the thread starter of: http://ventrilo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31361

Made that before I noticed this one. I've sent off the evidence I've collected to Shaw -- haven't heard squat in 24 hours besides the standard auto-reply. Unfortunately switching providers isn't much of a choice for me.
I can live with Shaw throttling my torrents, but when I can't talk with my friends, I'm getting pissed.

Hopefully Flagship and Shaw will stop pointing fingers at each other and try to find some middle ground to solve the issue.

Zeknichov 10-07-2008 04:44 PM

This is not a 3.0 vent issue afaik. This didn't start as soon as 3.0 hit, this started about 1-2 weeks after. A few weeks ago I got a new modem (thus new ip address) and the problem was fixed, until about a week later. Give it a try, get a new IP address and the problem will be fixed until Shaw reassigns shaping restrictions on your connection. I had a guy come to my house to fix my connection who confirmed a new IP would result in a fresh open connection he called it, with 0 limitations until Shaw reassigns limitations based on whatever algorithms they use. I made the guy aware of the problem but he laughed saying the guys in networking who deal in traffic shaping are about as secretive as they come and there's nothing he or I can do about the problem.

For the uninitiated, what would be the best way to go about doing this? My home network connects to a router, and then from the router to the modem.
I've looked on Google, but either I'm searching the wrong phrasing/keywords, or the results I'm getting aren't effective. The best I've been able to do is assign a new MAC address to my PC, which, since Shaw detects the MAC of my router first, does not help alleviate the issue in any way.

Zeknichov 10-08-2008 08:36 AM

Releasing and renewing the lan ip vis the router.
Cloning your mac address.
Unplugging the modem for an hour and plugging it back in.
Getting a new modem.

Zeknichov 10-17-2008 10:51 PM

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any success with Shaw? I've decided to switch to Telus since their new 6mbit connection is bearable compared to the prior top of the line 3mbit connection. I'll miss my 20mbit connection but the traffic shaping has gotten out of hand with Shaw. I cannot play games and run utorrent at the same time while only using 10% of my bandwidth and my ping is much higher in FPS games (without running utorrent) compared to my friends who go through Telus so I've had it with Shaw. I called in and asked to speak to someone who delt with their traffic shaping and I may as well have called in and asked to speak with the president of the United States.

Goeser 10-24-2008 12:15 AM

I live in Vancouver and use Shaw as my ISP. I have only recently been having these ping problems. But, just like most of the others who have posted, I start with a nice low ping ~40 and shoot up as high as 90k ms. No one else on the server experiences the lag.

blyndem 10-28-2008 12:22 AM

Yeap. Having the exact same problem, can hear everyone in vent fine, but when I talk I get skyrocketed pings in the 1000k-90000k range...

I'm also sure its shaw.. that would seem to make the most sense, as I too have gone through everything searching for the problem...

I am located in Thunder Bay, Ontario and have just recently started recieving this problem a few days ago. I never had the problem before with 2.3.x

Checked the router, computer, soundcard, modem, firewalls, software, connection speed/ping, vent on high priority ETC. I have done EVERYTHING.
The most recent attempt was deleting bittorrent off of another computer on my lan, and then phoning shaw (20 MINS ON HOLD BTW), and getting the guy to reset modem and ip/mac address.
I am STILL recieving high pings and I'm at a standstill.

Not the first time ive had problems with shaw.. but this really made me quite angry. Would LOVE to hear of a fix, perhaps something I did wrong? ..i'll do anything to get vent working again:confused: ...sigh.

blyndem 10-29-2008 03:30 PM

Solution.

SUCESS.

I've actually fixed the problem after working on it for quite a while.

I uninstalled bittorrent off of my other computer on the LAN first. Like, completely cleaned it out, reg files, background things running, and all. After that I found a program, called SMAC I believe, that changes your software MAC address on the network card your using (not really sure if this helped at all). Finally I released my IP via my d-link wireless router, and then unplugged both the modem and router overnight (8 hours). Doing this sucessfully granted me a NEW IP from shaw. (I also know there are other ways to obtain a new IP but this method works the best for me.)

SO.
If you are having this problem and still have not found a fix i sugest doing these steps.

1. COMPLETELY remove the torrent client. (Bittorrent, uTorrent etc.)
2. (Not sure if this always is needed but I would sugest it) "spoof" your MAC address and obtain a different one. Do this using a program, router, MAC cloning etc.
3. Release your old IP and do what you need to do to obtain a new one. (Once again various ways of doing this.)

Hopefully this will solve the ping issues and return vent to its normal state as it's done for mine. It seems the problem was on Shaw's side, and that obtaining a new IP will effectivly remove you from their "packet shaping" or whatever they use to ruin our connection. The downside of all this is that you basically cannot have both bittorrent and Vent if you are having these problems, which does suck ALOT for some people as you now have to choose one.

I hope this helps all the annoyed shaw users who have encountered this problem. Seems I've once again found another reason to hate Shaw even more.:)

*EDIT* Nevermind. Problems back.

Has anyone tried this and found that it's still working ?

potvin 11-06-2008 01:24 AM

I am in Calgary and get the same crap. I just got off the phone with Shaw, and they instructed me to get in touch with Ventrilo to see if they could contact shaw to work this out. Shaw believes it is something on Ventrilo servers side rather than their network. Which may be true because the only program we seem to lose packets on are the various vents.

potvin 11-06-2008 05:44 PM

Is there any admins that can comment on this? Shaw says they can only put a note on file but if ventrilo (flagship) works with shaw to rectify this this will get resolved for all of us shaw internet users on the west portion of Canada.

Prog-Rocker 11-06-2008 07:08 PM

we will need some contact info for Shaw in order to get this ball rolling.

could everyone also provide the server ipaddress (or hostname) that you have trouble with in case they need to narrow down a particular path. (or in case we need to get a test server from one of the hosters)

potvin 11-06-2008 10:13 PM

Sure...one of the servers I usually hang out on..the ip is 208.100.40.20:4159
And the phone number to shaw is 1-403-716-6000
Is this info any good?

jsilicz 11-07-2008 12:15 AM

Frustrating

This is very frustrating as I have removed ALL torrent like programs (including avast), I have changed my MAC address, and yet I still get MASSIVE lag on vent.

Can anyone in a few sentences sum up what exactly they are doing so when I call shaw tomorrow I do not sound like an idiot? Either they are throttling my bandwith or they are not packet shaping my vent with other programs?

Is that right?

thanks.

Micawow 11-07-2008 05:33 AM

I've been having this exact same problem, random giant lag spikes. All this time I figured it was my host but it could be Shaw. I live in Victoria and currently using Shaw Extreme and we're getting massive lag spikes up to 26626 ping very often.

However, on some servers it doesn't happen, it depends on where the server is.

jsilicz 11-07-2008 04:49 PM

My email received this response:

---------------------------------------------------
Thank you for your e-mail.

We are aware that there is a problem with the Ventrillo program as far as latency in the Shaw network, and we are working to get it resolved. In the meantime, one suggestion from our network techs is to try changing the port of Ventrillo to 3784. Please refer to the documentation of the program as to how to change the port of the software.

Zeknichov 11-07-2008 06:36 PM

Well I switched to adsl and vent is working perfectly, so obviously its Shaw. Here's the thing though, only I out of everyone I know who uses Shaw has the problem. My theory is that it is something to do with customer specific traffic shaping (I torrent, A LOT), does anyone have any other theories? I'm wondering because I was going to phone Shaw and threaten to switch to Telus unless they stop shaping my traffic but would like to know if that's even the problem before I do something so bold.

Giudecca 11-08-2008 08:16 PM

I just started getting massive vent pings when transmitting this week. We recently moved to a new vent server, and on Tuesday I didnt have a problem but I wasnt talking much. Now whenever I talked today my ping would jump to 20000 or so.

The only change I can tell that happened was the port changed from the 3784 to 3870. If anything that might mean that change in ports caused shaw to look at the data differently? I don't know, but I can only listen on vent now and it's highly irritating.

I have Shaw Extreme, and have 2 roommates who download torrents all the time, but I havent even opened a torrent program in months.

potvin 11-09-2008 10:57 PM

I tried a vent with port number 3784 and there is a difference. I believe there isnt any lag. I suggest everyone try a vent with that port number. But they still need to fix it with the other ported vent....

Westward 11-10-2008 01:40 PM

Is there a way to request JUST a port change ? My vent provider ( DarkstarLLC) lets you pick a new server location but doesn't display the port...email them i guess ?

Yes they should be able to change the port number hopefully. But it has to be done on the server side. I am not sure if the admins of the vent can change it. I am on a vent right now with the port 9412...and I still get pings to 30k....LAWL! I didnt get lag when I used the port 3784...but like Shaw said that's only a temporary solution. Hopefully Flagship and Shaw are working on this and it will be resolved soon!

It has to be changed by your ventrilo providor....

anduin 11-13-2008 03:47 PM

and here i thought my router was the cause of my vent having ridiculous pings so I unplug it and connect to chat with some online gamer buddies and next thing I know i have a 25000+ ping (wth) non stop, no matter what I try to mod in setup. Is there no solution for us on Shaw ? This is really aggrevating.

Westward 11-18-2008 01:57 PM

OK, apparently I replied in the wrong post since my reply was deleted...

All I wanted to know is if there's any update or solution in the works between Shaw and Flagship ?

duckdown 11-21-2008 12:12 PM

I live in Sherwood Park, Alberta. I am having the same problem.

I've been having this problem for over a month now. My ping jumps from under 100 depending on server to 10,000 to 15,000. http://www.ventrilo.com/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif I have tried restarting my shaw modem which doesn't help. I uninstalled the program many of times, but with my uninstall i don't think all the files are getting deleted because when i reinstall the app. my username and all my server names are still there. when uninstall is used I do it through add/remove programs, I check program files and it removes the ventrilo folder + I do a search, which finds a few files. I delete those files as will. but when i reinstall, my username and server names/ip's are still there? I don't know what to do.

can someone till me how to delete ALL of the ventrilo files or help me solve my ping problem because i don't know what to do. I can't use ventrilo like this

I'm also in the Park and deleting Ventrilo won't fix the problem, it's something that needs to be corrected on Shaws side....Apparently Flagship and Shaw are in talks so hopefully we'll be able to use Vent again soon :D

duckdown 11-21-2008 04:15 PM

what do you use vent for?

Prog-Rocker 11-21-2008 07:11 PM

can someone find out if Shaw uses Bell Canada as one of their backbone providers?

dbx_5 11-27-2008 01:05 PM

Shaw does Packet shaping in western Canada this is known not sure if this is one of the effects of them doing so, I have noticed this issue happeing to me with pings on vent ill have a nice ping of 80 or less then spike right up to 30k the moment I start talking, even if my ping stays at 30k though I can hear people fine.

Been testing a lot of things tonight. Was getting massive lag spikes and packet loss until I cycled the power to my router and made sure vent was shutdown.

Have been playing fine since then. Pretty much just have to play without vent at the moment because how Shaw associates it with Bitorrent :(

Westward 12-01-2008 01:07 PM

Alright I had a good solid week...lag free and then all of a sudden this weekend I was lag out beyond use...has any progress been made ? Can we get a simple update "We talked to Shaw and THIS is happening" anything ?

I pay for this service and I can not use it...

JNS| sTeWiE 12-02-2008 02:39 AM

I'm from Calgary and am having the similar problems. Screw shaw, I get rediculous lag, I can hear everyone fine but can't talk at all. This problem started maybe a month ago or more but I have had shaw all along and have never had the problem before. I have bittorrent but I dont ever use it when I am on vent so I'm pretty sure thats not the problem. I would sure appreciate vent working with shaw on this issue to produce a solution.

vaenyc 12-04-2008 02:31 AM

So has anyone gotten this resolved, either by phoning or posting required information in the other stickied thread (see: http://ventrilo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32499)? Sounds pretty lame considering the fact that other ISPs for everyone else on a 200 man vent server aren't causing those problems for their clients. Time to brush up on available packages from Telus and others I guess..

Edit: I phoned in about the problem, we'll see what happens in about a week.

kennny2004 12-09-2008 05:52 PM

yah ive called them they said it is ventrilo but yah i expected that, anyways i toke some online bit torrent throttle test or w/e that apperantly tells you if your internet connection being throttled anyways i thought this might be intresting

Downstream Bandwidth: 8492 Kbps Downstream Queue: 84 ms Upstream Bandwidth: 1011 Kbps Upstream Queue: 697 ms
so for some reasons the upload is super high which is exactly the problem sinec i can hear/play games without any lag but when i talk i lag and my upload is tottaly open without anything uploading but ventrilo

source: http://broadband.mpi-sws.org/transparency/

Slipknotix 12-09-2008 06:35 PM

oh thank god there are other people that have this problem with shaw. Like many of the people above i can play MOST games lag. But ventrilo spikes like a bitch 5-6 days a week then will be fine for the other days.
I have accually been fine over the past say 3 days im hoping the problem has fixed itsself but i kind of doubt it.
If there is anyone else out there with this problem with shaw and also plays the real version of Ultima Online could you log on while your having problems with ventilo. Because my Ultima and Ventrilo problems are one in the same, even though the other games are fine while ventrilo if messed

vaenyc 12-10-2008 12:28 AM

Quick question if any of you guys can answer... What package do you have wish Shaw? The "High speed", the "Xtreme-I" or the "Nitro"? I am on High speed. Just wondering because they have something they call "PowerBoost" (http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsServices/Internet/PowerBoost/) which has the potential to maybe resolve the issue. Can anyone confirm what they have?
