College dorm vent connection issues *please read*

I just recently moved into my college dorm and the internet appears to work for some applications. In WoW my latency has actually gone down from the connection I am used to at home. However, I can not connect to Vent at all. I select my guild's vent from the drop down menu and it says "Server is available." I hit connect and the message changes to "Connecting to server" and goes nowhere from there. This is not only for my guild's server, as I have tried connecting to other servers as well. As I am in a competitive raiding guild I have to get this fixed, since vent is a must. I appreciate your comments and suggestions and thanks in advance.

sounds like the campus networking dept has some ports blocked.

make note of all the servers ipaddresses and port#s you need to connect to then contact the IT dept and request the ports be allowed. they will need to allow both TCP and UDP for each port as well as port 6100 UDP

How can I obtain this information?

Do you mean that I simply give the department the vent info. For instance, my guild's server name/host ip and the port number?

yes

the info is found in the server setup section at the top of the window

also look for server info if you have different user names

Would they have any reason to say no?

it's possible as they have control over the network. but you can also tell them that vent is a voice-over-ip programs that uses a strict client-server connection.

Hi I just recently moved in as a freshy in college. This is a big school and I just bought an ethernet cable and plugged it in. I used to use wireless at home and I was excited to see what a grounded connection would be like. Anyway, my vent takes a little longer than normal to connect but it still does** When I try to talk to people and they answer their talk microphone goes green but it is soooo choppy I cant understand a word they are saying. Also, my ping jumps from like 16 to 20k!!!! Can anyone help? Because this thread is relevant but I CAN CONNECT. JUST NOT FUNCTION WITHIN VENT.

Depends on the rules and documentation they are guided with. Most likely they will be able to accommodate you if it's not a big bureaucratic issue present at many universities.
