Default Failed to open sound input device. rc=-10

Okay, so this started happening yesterday. I have my headset plugged in, vent working, sound working, and it will work fine for a couple minutes (rarely longer), and then all my sound instantly is gone! I receive the following messages in a vent pop-up window.

First error message in vent:
Your sound input device has stopped sending data to the Ventrilo client. Please verify that your sound drivers are up to date, that you have selected the correct sound input device and that it is properly attached to your computer. USB microphone devices can come loose and some sound cards will shutdown the input port if your microphone is not properly connected to the sound card.

If you click Setup, and then click the OK button, the Ventrilo client will attempt to reset your sound input device.

Shortly followed by:
Failed to open sound input device. rc=-10, CreateCaptureBuffer failed. HR=E_FAIL. An undetermined error occurred

I have a logitech headset. This started happening on two different computers, with both logitech headsets. I have every windows update installed on this particular computer.

Once the sound stops working I encounter the following issues:
-I cannot make any changes to my sound settings.
-I get a "Not Responding" when I try to close down any program.
-I cannot restart my computer. When I do, it sits at "Shutting down" for an indefinite amount of time requiring me to do a hard shut down (hold down the power button for 10 seconds).

I have no clue what to do to resolve this.

Any help would be appreciated.

first, run a complete/full virus-spyware-malware scan.

the next time everything locks up try opening windows taskmanager/processes tab and look for anything that might be using too much cpu time.

does the headset on both pcs plug into the onboard sound or do they use a USB port?

check the windows event viewer for possible error reports.

start > run
eventvwr

post the following info as it might help to determine the problem:

DXDIAG

Start > Run
Dxdiag
Click the 'Save All' button
File is saved to the desktop as "DxDiag.txt"
Copy/paste the information to the forum. The information will have to be separated into multiple posts due to the maximum character limitation.

System Info Tool

This will display information from the Windows Taskmanager / Services that are in a "Started" state / and entries in the Run & RunOnce registry folders. It will not make any changes as it is 'Read Only'.

  1. Virus scan, done. Ran two separate scans and nothing detected.
  2. When this happened previously, I did run task manager. Nothing out of the ordinary was using excessive resources. I had WoW running, and vent. I think Firefox was using 214k Mb, and the remaining processes were well below that. (I believe WoW had been closed at the time).
  3. The headsets are plugged into USB ports. USB 2.0 on my desktop, USB 3.0 on my laptop.
  4. I will have to wait until this happens again to check the event viewer.
  5. DXDIAG, I'll grab that info the next time this happens.

hmm, haven't seen that error message before.

are there any error messages in windows event viewer regarding the usb ports?

start > run
eventvwr

what other usb devices are plugged in?

are you using a usb hub? if yes does it have its own power supply?
