does the mic work here:

Windows XP
Control-Panel / Sounds and Audio / Voice Tab / Test Hardware Button

Windows Vista/Windows 7
Programs / Accessories / Sound Recorder / create a recording then save it
Windows Media Player (WMP) / playback recording

that error message might also indicate this:

Yea, the mic worked fine with recording.

My microphone is part of a webcam. This thing has worked forever, but lately stopped. So i have nothing else to plug it in with for that error

in vent setup, is the input device set to enable 'use directsound' and the name set to that of the webcam?

clik the monitor button, then speak and watch the value of numbers that are displayed in the box. they should be at least in double digits.

in windows c-panel/sound properties, goto the recording tab and disable all other devices except the webcam

in vent setup, try unchecking the input 'use directsound' then setting the name back to logitech.

is the driver for the webcam up to date? check the logitech website.

is the hardware mixer set to 'none'

if the webcam is a usb device then try moving it to a different usb port.

in vent setup, try setting the input device name to 'default'. test with checking and unchecking 'use directsound' while it's set to default.

try setting both Vent to ‘Run As Administrator’ (rt-click their icon / properties / compatibility tab / privilege level) or (rt-click their icon and select 'Run as Adminitrator')

try turning off ‘User Account Control’ located in Windows Control-Panel/User Accounts
