Question Can't hear anyone. But they can hear me.

Howdy folks,
So my problem is in Ventrilo people can hear me, but i cant hear them. I'm entirely out of ideas here... I'll start with what happened leading up to this issue - I was in Ventrilo talking to a few mates when i decided to reboot my PC, so i exited vent and all other Apps and rebooted. When my computer was back up i could no longer hear anyone.

When i connect to Ventrilo i can hear the connection .wav, which sound likes just at the end it cuts out. From there i can't hear anything in Ventilo at all. If i go to setup and click Test and talk, i can hear myself fine. Changing Ventrilo usernames/channels does not have an effect either.

I have tried turning the 'Use Direct Sound' features on and off, uninstalling/reinstalling Vent, and have even gone as far as to try a full System Restore. None of which have helped.

From what i can see, the folks at Ventrilo are in complete denial about this issue.. No one that i can find has a solution, and everyone i have found that has contacted Ventrilo tech has come back with a 'We dont know about that issue' report. Well, it certainly does exist, in fact i can find people on this forum with exactly the same issue who themselves said that tech support said the problem doesn't exist and still don't have a fix.

Has anyone got a solution for this? Or does any Techy want to have a crack at this?

Thanks a lot,
G.

what OS and audio device are you using?

here's a few things to check/try if you haven't already done so:

are there any error messages in the vent log file? rt-clik in window/view/log file/scroll to bottom

Check the Audio driver to make sure it is up to date. Or try re-installing the current driver.
(note: some USB Headsets do not require a driver)
(Don’t assume the driver is up to date as a newer one may have been released since the computer was built)

- If you have a brand-name PC, like Dell or HP, then check the manufacturers website for driver updates.
- If you built the PC and use the on-board sound device then check the motherboard manufacturers website for drivers for your model motherboard.
- If you use a plug-in soundcard, like SoundBlaster, then check that manufacturers website for drivers.

Also check for BIOS and chipset updates
Is your system sound configured for 5.1 or 7.1?
(XP - windows control-panel / sounds / click the ‘Advanced’ button in the ‘Speaker Settings’ section / speaker setup input box setting)
(Vista/Win7 – windows control-panel / sounds / Playback / select speaker device / ‘Configure’ button / Audio Channels)

If yes then:
Goto Vent setup/voice-binds-speech tabs / SFX button / Directional / Add “Front Left & Right 5.1 (or 7.1)”

in vent setup/voice-binds-speech tabs, set the output to enable 'use directsound' then set the name of the audio device you're using

Starting From Scratch

Write down your Username and Server information
exit vent
goto START/RUN and enter: %appdata%\ventrilo

right-click on ventrilo2.ini and select “Rename”
give the file a different name

or
delete the Ventrilo folder
restart vent

re-enter your username and server information

I have the exact same issue, just came out of no where. I left to work with it working fine, I come home to talk to someone on vent about something after I finished work and it doesnt work. Exact same symptoms as Godbot, a few others have written similar posts on the forums here and had no fix for this issue. I have tried all the solutions offered by people on these forums, there is no error in the vent log and sound works perfectly fine everywhere else on the computer. Even certain parts of vent works fine but none of the important stuff like hearing other people talk to me. They can hear me just fine by the way, and ive run out of idea's. maybe that 64 bit codec wasnt ready to be released?

Im using Windows 7 -64 bit
SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio card

Disabling CMSS-3d only worked with me ty vm for your help.. but why would that make a difference? I dont even know how it got turned on since no one updated anything or changed any settings while I was at work.

Either way ty vm

I have the same errors. I can hear the sounds in private chat when I receive a message. I can hear the log on sound. I can hear the log off sound too. However, I checked the log file and it says that there are errors. Certain wav files aren't working.

I know how to find them in the system but I don't know what to do once I find them. It was working perfectly fine then all of a sudden it just stopped. Please help me out. I'm not a computer expert so I need things explained simply.

Kittae... If your sounds are not working properly, you may want to completely uninstall and reinstall Ventrilo to get those files working again. To do this, first uninstall Ventrilo using the Remove Programs option in Windows. Once the program has been deleted, please remove the Ventrilo folder in your system's AppData folder by clicking on Start -> Run and typing in the following line:

%appdata%

You should then see a Ventrilo folder which can be deleted to ensure that none of your previous settings are still on the computer at which point you can then reinstall Ventrilo. If you continue to have trouble hearing certain events over your server, please let us know.
