Default Mic issue

No matter what I do, Vent uses my onboard mic as input.
I have a new iMac and finally bought myself a pair of Razer Carcharias headphones and want to put them to good use. They're not USB, they hook up as audio-in/audio-out.
Access for assistive devices is enabled, the mic isn't muted on the inline remote... I had this problem with any headset I've tried.

Here's my current set-up in Vent. I've fiddled with the Input preferences and find that only my current selection actually allows me to make any noise (through the "Test" function).

Hope I've given adequate information... I'd really like to give the new headset a spin, and it'll break my heart if it turns out I've wasted about $90 for nothing.

Halp?

If i'm not mistaken macs need amplified mics, so not just any mic plugged into the audio-in jack will work. I learned that just like you, after buying a headset that turned out not to be amplified on the microphone side.

That is correct. That input is actually a Line In input and a standard Mic doesn't run at line level - it needs amplification to work properly with the Line In input. These devices are called line level mic amps or more commonly a mic preamp

An unpowered Mic will not work. I would suggest a USB Mic and/or headset or better yet, pick up a Griffin iMic

I believe you can also pick up a line level mic amp at an electronics stores for $20-$30 if you want to avoid USB.

Thanks to both of you!
I'm taking your advice, Jaycyn, and buying an iMic.
