Default monitoring microphone through headphones ONLY DURING PTT?

I've been searching for an answer to this, but havn't found one. Sorry if this has been posted before.

I recently got a pair of nice over-ear, closed headphones. Love the way they sound, but it makes speaking in ventrilo strange because i can't quite hear myself.

I turned on monitoring in my operating system (win xp), but it's kindof annoying to hear all the time (keystrokes, clicking, etc).

Is there a way to enable mic monitoring so that it only does so when i hold down my mic bind? I figure this would be a ventrilo option, if it's possible.

Thanks in advance.

what brand audio are you using?

how did you enable monitoring?

some audio devices have an option in the mic properties that allow you to 'monitor/listen' to the mic input

I have Realtek Audio. I can enable it from the windows sound options (in master volume controls, un-mute mic volume, but I just want it to monitor when I'm using my mic bind.
