Default Vent freezes when I click Setup and mic doesn't work

I've read about this problem but am at a loss as to how to fix it. I'm using WinXP Pro. I have a Soundblaster sound card, Turtle Beach surround sound USB headset with mic. If I click [Ctrl] Setup, the computer doesn't freeze so I understand it's a problem with my sound drivers. Any time I run vent and click the Setup button my computer freezes, becomes unusable and I have to physically shut it off to reset. I can't even use task manager to end task, it won't work. I've used this computer (a Dell XPS 700) for 3 years and bought the TB headset over a year ago and it all worked together fine until the other day. I was using vent, it hung, I rebooted and can't get it working again ever since. I've used Revo uninstaller to uninstall and reinstall vent as well as my Sigma HD audio drivers, I've also updated and reinstalled my SB sound card drivers. It's driving me nutz! If I don't hit the Setup button I can log onto a server no problem but when I push my PTT button nothing happens, no green light, no sound from my mic. Anyone have a suggestion other than getting out my 44 magnum?

most likely a driver problem.

also ensure that mute mic is not checked at the bottom of ventrilo.

you can try re-installing DirectX

or try lowering the 'hardware accelleration' 1 notch in dxdiag

start / run
dxdiag
select sound tab

reboot after setting

I had the same issue and I determined the cause was a USB device that was interfering with Vent. In my case it is a USB joystick. I'd try disconnecting all peripherals except keyboard and mouse (and mic if it's usb) and see if that works.

Thanks for the replies. Playing with the drivers made things start hanging and WoW started freezing so I just went ahead and reformatted my C: drive and I'm reinstalling everything. Hopefully my problem with vent will go away. If not, I'll be back.

Thanks for the replies.

Cheers!
