Default Ping Issue Suddenly

I have had the same vent host for a few years. I use an iMac 20 inch and have made no changes to the system for months. Today my ping went way up and I cannot understand everyone. They are all using vent fine but it isn't working for me.

Here is the traceroute info.

i think there might have been a backbone problem in the LA area as another poster was also having ping problems to a server in LA.
