Sound cutting off

I've recently started encontering a problem with the sound on Ventrilo. I never had this issue before and I haven't made any changes to Vent itself or my system to warrant these issues.

When I speak in Vent, often enough, people will say I cut off after a few words -or- that my voice is being broken up by pockets of silence every 2-3 words.

The other issue I've been noticing occasionally, is that I won't hear some people although everyone else can (including other Mac users) and sometimes, while being in the server, things will get quiet and when I tab out, I realize people's mic icons are lit up green however I can't hear them (and no the Vent app did not freeze up as the mic icons light up and go red like as if nothing was wrong at all, I just can't hear them). Logging out and back in solves this issue until it happens again. Obviously this is a real detrament while in the middle of a raid, and never actually knowing if people just got quiet or if indeed I can no longer hear them.

Anyone else experiencing this? Have any ideas whats wrong and/or how to fix it?

does the vent ping get abnormally high when the problem starts?

in vent setup, are the input/output devices set to the correct sound device?
are the outbound/inbound amplifiers set to 0?

As for the ping, I'm not sure. I'll have to check the next time it happens.

The input and output settings haven't changed, they are both set to use my headset for the vent sound. The amplifiers are not at 0 but that's nothing new. I've always had to mess with those depending on who's on since we have a lack of controlling individual users' volume and have no sound normalization in the Mac client. I've been adjusting the amplifier settings since I started using vent over 2 years ago and only in the last 2-3 weeks have I started having these problems.
