Default Windows 8 and Vent 3.0.8 issue

All, On a clean reboot I can connect to a private Ventrilo server fine, however, once I disconnect and close the program, I cannot connect to the same server if I reopen the application. Logging in and out of windows does not resolve the issue. I have to do a restart of the computer if I want to use Ventrilo again. I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this as there is no logging indicating issues other than I cannot reconnect to the server until I reboot. Any thoughts into what may be causing this? It appears to me as though Ventrilo is not releasing the port but I have not tested for that yet. Thanks, Olhadon

what firewall/antivirus apps are you running?

check the windows taskmanager/processes tab to make sure you only have 1 firewall/av software active.

check the windows taskmanager again after exiting vent to see if vent is still running.

when this problem starts, try telneting to one of the servers:

start > run
cmd {hit enter}
telnet serverhostname port#

(where serverhostname={the server ipaddress or hostname of the server you’re trying to connect to (found in vent client server setup)} and port#={port associated with that server}
(example: “telnet 75.125.43.51 3784” or “telnet www.myserver.com 3784” without the quotes)

If Telnet is able to connect then the screen will go blank. If not, then you will see an error message about not being able to connect.

Enabling Telnet in Vista/Windows 7

Control-Panel / Programs and Features / Turn Windows features on or off / select “Telnet Client” / click OK

If telnet can't connect then vent won't either as telnet is a function of the tcp/ip stack which is a part of the operating system. If it can't make a tcp connection then something is preventing the connection on that specific port#. if you've eliminated all possibilities with your internal network then try contacting your ISP and have them try to telnet to the server to see if they can connect from their end.

I get connected, then immediately disconnected using telnet

Trying xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx...
Connected to xxxxxx.xxxxx.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

It still seems to me that there is a port that is not getting released.

hmmm,

let's try this test. reboot windows into safe mode then start vent. let it connect then disconnect and try to re-connect.

Restart Windows
Keep hitting the F8 function key before the Windows logo appears. You should see a list of options to choose from.
Select “Safe Mode with Networking”. This will boot windows into a very basic configuration but also allow network drivers to load.

-------
also try temp disabling clamwin
-------

what does the vent window display after disconnecting from the server?

MSG: ????

This issue can be closed.

I tracked the problem down to Ventrilo not working nicely with private internet access vpn. Every other voip program I have used thus far works fine while on a vpn.

Ventrilo works fine the first time after a reboot but subsequent launching of the application fails to connect. This is more than likely because of Ventrilo establishing a connection before PIA is up and running.

Solution/workaournd for use with vpn:
I also located your post on this issue here http://forum.ventrilo.com/showthread.php?p=4094449

Thanks for your help.
