Before our server admin to change the .ini file, I'd like to know... Does this affect the other clients in any negative way? I know you can make it so quality and bandwidth are similar, but will they have to change their setup options?
I'd hate to inconvenience the 50+ people that use our server for one person. I'd rather just inconvenience the admin. >< |

once the server is adjusted, the client will need to do nothing. the change is automatic.
suggest to the admin to change it and restart the server with people connected, but not tell them what is going on. the server will restart and all clients will automatically reconnect. If a proper Speex setting is chosen, then connected users will probably not notice a difference. |

You should also encourage all windows users to download the 2.3.2.Beta.1 from the bottom of the ventrilo download page. It will improve sound quality when using the speex codec.

It looks like to have an equal quality with the version of GSM that my guild uses it will require about double the bandwidth - which is why my guild is slow to want to change to Speex since we have a number of people on dial-up.

Honestly I'm not sure the specs of the GSM Codec that they are using - since i have not had access. Our GM indicated that it looked like it was going to take double the bandwidth which will be difficult for some of the dial-up users in our guild (a small number, but a larger number than this lone Mac user).
I'll see if i can find out. Edit: He thinks we use 01GSM6.10 (11KHz, 16bit) 2210 bytes/sec and was looking at switching to 38Speex (8KHz, 16 bit 8 Qlty) 1922/bytes/sec or 39Speex (8KHz, 16 bit, 9 Qlty) 2384 bytes/sec Last edited by CDavis; 11-13-2005 at 01:44 AM. |

My GM reported using similar bandwidth settings btwn GSM and Speex.
Everyone thinks things sound better; few ppl have even downloaded the new Windows beta. |

Don't use 8Khz. The sound quality is horrible even before being compressed.
Use a 16 or 32Khz sample rate and find a Qlty setting close to the bandwidth usage you currently haver. |

Our guild server switched to Speex and it works great!
I was able to use my isight mic when I had the MAc server set up on my box, but on the guild server, it did not work, just static. I will try to play around with it, but if anyone would know why this would happen I would love to know. Thanx for the Vent...awesome! |
