Default Is there a quality difference?

My guild won't change to Speex for me because a few people say they've heard the quality of Speex and say there's a reason people pay for Ventrilo GSM servers.

Unfortunately it's my word against theres.

Honestly, is there a difference? I've read many posts here saying that the quality is 'fantastic' and 'really clear' but how does it compare to GSM? Are my guildies going to log on after/if it gets changed and notice a difference in quality?

I really don't like the idea of inconveniencing 60+ people just for me.

(please include GSM compatibility soon )

If set for equivalent settings, you won't notice any difference.

The only problem reported by some is having issues with Windows users that have very old sound cards.

I'd recommend you arrange with your guild to change it and test it immediately after a raid. That way if there are users with old sound cards that have issues, it will not affect a raid in progress.

Default There apparently is a difference

My guild tested it and found Speex to be distinctly less clear, so they're sticking with GSM. They think the highest-level Speex sounds worse than even the mid-level GSM.

Then they're lying and haven't tested it properly. After experimentation inside the set-up window of the windows client, every combination of the GSM codec can be recreated by using the Speex settings in the test feature - so the same is true when implemented on a server. if anything, the Speex gives you tons more options for intermediate quality against bandwidth usage, the GSM is limited in it's seperate deviations.

On another note, people don't pay just to have GSM codecs running, they pay for a vent server and they just happen to have GSM enabled as they are top of the list; it's just become an industry standard, nothing more. Time to break that standard though.

Sounds like your guild just doesn't want to change. Speex is every bit as good as GSM when equivalent settings are used. I switch back and forth between a Speex server and a GSM server (using the Windows client) and I can't tell a difference.

thanks wade. when configured properly, the speex codec is pretty damn good.
