Default Blocked Port

The campus-wide firewall that my college uses blocks the port that vent uses to connect. I have contacted them about this and they declined to open the port for security reasons which I guess is understandable. Someone suggested port forwarding as a way to get around this but as far as I can tell I would need access to the router's settings, which I don't have and can't get. I honestly have had enough time to really look at it so I going to continue down that road for now. In the meantime, I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions for getting ventrilo to work when the port is blocked by a firewall.
