I'm on a new iMac that I've only had for a couple days now, the codex is set to speex, and I have checked the box under system preferences; I can hear people talking, but when I go to talk no none can hear me. Why? What else needs to be done or what is it I am missing?

The non-USB headset definitely won't work.
Have you tried a different server? It might be a permissions issue. |

In the sound input preference pane, do you show input occurring when you speak? Does the headset mic work with other applications?

with the usb plugged in, goto 'system preferences / sound / output & input / select the usb headset. in the input section make sure the 'input level' is set appropriately. test the mic while you're there. when you speak you should see the input level meter register.
in vent setup, set the output/input devices to the usb headset |
