Default Choppy sound

I use a mac and am talking on a speex codec server. Apparently my voice sounds very "choppy" and a few seconds behind to everyone listening, and everyone I hear sounds choppy to me. What is causing this?

A month ago I was using the same exact ISP and was using vent with no problems, I've tried connecting to different servers and seeing if I sound choppy on those and it's the same on all of them.

First guest would be a problem with your internet connection. Run the speedtest here and post the results.

The two things I can think of that would cause it are:

1) CPU getting overloaded
2) Excessive packet loss

For #1, what kind of Mac is it?

For #2, numerous things could cause this. Bad Ethernet port, bad cabling, incorrect switch configuration, etc. And just because you can browse the Internet and play games does not mean that this is not happening, as those applications are far less sensitive to packet loss than voice.

But, since #2 is uncommon, let's start with #1 first.

Hmm...2 things could be an issue there:

1) If you're using wireless. Wireless connections can suffer from interference and have packet loss. If you are using wireless, try it with wired Ethernet and see if it improves.

2) That's not very much RAM. By the time you load vent and your game up, you may be paging out to VM. That certainly could cause choppy sound. If the Ethernet doesn't work, try adding more RAM.
