What server are you trying to connect to? An existing one that your guild has?

Given that you unsure of what a server is or how it operates, I'd strongly urge you to rent a server. You'll save yourself a lot of time and frustration since you don't sound comfortable working on the command line, configuring port-forwarding on your router, etc.

The company that I recommend is typefrag: http://www.typefrag.com

But, if they don't suit your needs, you can find a full list of authorized hosting companies here:

Keep in mind that once you rent a server, you'll need to configure it to use the Speex codec in order for Mac users to utilize it. You usually change it just by selecting the Speex codec from a menu on the provider's web-based server control panel. If you have questions on how to do it, contact the company's tech support department.
