PTT gets overridden with loud noises
I have a iMac with built in mic - and use that for vent. Unfortunately, when I set up push to talk, it can get overridden by loud noises - say, my dogs barking in the room. This happens often enough that I have to run vent with on mute so I can hear but I can't talk. I can't wear a headset due to a disability. Is this a mac issue or do I need to fix a setting?

in system preferences, goto sound properties > input

if available, enable the 'ambient noise reduction'

also try lowering the mic input volume

Just to clarify, do you want to get your audio input from your internal imac speaker or from the headset?

It sounds like it is coming from the iMac speaker which would explain the ambient background noise.

If you want it coming from the headset, set your System Preferences->Sound->Input tab to the Mic on the headset, and also the same with Ventrilo.

I use the imac speaker for the vent - and have done what Prog had suggested already to no effect. I have no headset at all because of the disability - cannot wear one.
I guess I am pretty much stuck with the sound limitations of the iMac?

I must apologize, I mis-read your post.

The sound limitation has nothing to do with the Mac, it has to do with microphones in general, unless they are directional, or very close to the speaker you will pick up ambient room noise.

An external directional USB Microphone is an inexpensive solution and may give the results you want

AH, gotcha! I used to do that before I had the iMac and never had that trouble. Great idea. I think I even had one around here somewhere. Thank you so much.
