Once you have the Event Viewer open, can you copy and paste some of the results pertaining to Ventrilo here in this thread?

Also, have you tried performing any Tests in the Ventrilo Setup Menu with your Headset? Click "Setup" and then use your PTT to talk into your microphone. Once you let go of the PTT, you should be hearing playback of your voice. If that works, please let us know.

Is your system sound configured for 5.1 or 7.1?
(Vista/Win7 – windows control-panel / sounds / Playback / select speaker device you're using for vent / ‘Configure’ button / Audio Channels)

if it's setup to use 5.1 then configure vent to match.
Goto Vent setup/voice-binds-speech tabs / SFX button / Directional / Add “Front Left & Right 5.1 (or 7.1)”

if it's not using 5.1 then make sure vent is also not using 5.1 > goto setup > clik the SFX button > directional > remove any properties from the left-side box
