Stuck on "Contacting Server"

I'm having trouble connecting to my clan's vent server. It's just stuck on "? MSG: Contacting Server"

I'm running latest version of ventrilo, using windows xp home sp3. Stuck to be honest.

Telnet is successful pretty much instantly...

Prog-Rocker 06-27-2011 04:18 PM

ok, looks like the UDP packets are getting blocked somewhere as the MSG is on contacting but the telnet works (which is TCP based)

first try turning off all firewall/virus/spyware/malware apps

Does your system have an older Bigfoot Killer Network Card installed? If yes, then try configuring it for "Application Mode" instead of "Game Mode"

Try powering off the modem-router-pc (in that order) for at least 60 seconds each (this will clear all cached data)

In Windows Network Properties, disable all un-used network card ports (some cards include both wired and wireless ports)
Windows Control-Panel / network and sharing / manage network connection / right-click on the device(s) that aren't used and select 'disable'

In Windows Network Properties, try disabling QoS:
Windows XP Control-Panel / network and sharing / view status (link on right side) / properties / uncheck "QoS Packet Scheduler"
Windows 7 Control-Panel / network and sharing / Change adapter settings link / right-click on the adapter in use / Properties / uncheck "QoS Packet Scheduler"

Booting Into Safe-Mode

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...ding-safe-mode

Restart Windows
Keep hitting the F8 function key before the Windows logo appears. You should see a list of options to choose from.
Select “Safe Mode with Networking”. This will boot windows into a very basic configuration but also allow network drivers to load.

Start Ventrilo to see if it connects all the way. If it works properly then there is something that is loading during the normal boot that is interferring with the connection.

sn1p3r 06-28-2011 11:38 AM

No I don't have any bigfoot network cards installed. I've tried disabling firewall and antivirus, still no luck. I've disabled unused network connections(only 2 connections available, unused is wired lan). I've disabled QoS and still nothing.

I'm unable to boot in safe mode +n because I required an internet connection from a T-Mobile Broadband dongle. I read somewhere on the forums to try turning off proxy settings but I don't believe the dongle is using a proxy? :s

sn1p3r 07-01-2011 12:09 PM

bump, still no luck at the moment...

Prog-Rocker 07-01-2011 12:26 PM

are you running any VPN software or does the tmobile have any vpn type settings?

fyi, there is another poster with a problem with tmobile too, tho his connection problem is a bit different
http://forum.ventrilo.com/showthread.php?t=47520

sn1p3r 07-01-2011 02:39 PM

Nope not running or using any VPN and as far as am I'm aware my tmobile don't either.
If it's any help I'm using the ZTE MF637 dongle modem. My tmobile software is to do date as well.

I tried this last a little longer than 10 seconds, more like 20-30ish. I'm running Windows XP Home SP3 and heres a screenshot.

ok, let's see if we can force windows to use a specific route to your server. post the results from the following command:

start > run
cmd
route print

i don't suppose there's a PPP dialup option for windows xp in that list?

There isn't a PPP dialp option for winxp as far as I'm aware, only other option available in that drop down menu is SLIP: Unix Connection.

Prog-Rocker 07-02-2011 08:55 AM

at the command prompt type in the following:

route add x.x.x.x mask 255.255.255.255 178.101.121.45 metric 1

where x.x.x.x is the ipaddress of your vent server
if you don't have the ipaddress you can find it via the hostname at this site:
http://network-tools.com/

select lookup then enter the hostname in the box.

sn1p3r 07-02-2011 10:51 AM

After entering that into command prompt...

Code:

C:\Documents and Settings\user>route add 72.37.221.158 mask 255.255.255.255 178.101.121.45 metric 1
The route addition failed: Either the interface index is wrong or the gateway does not lie on the same network as the interface. Check the IP Address Table for

i wondered if that might happen.

run this test program to check connectivity and post the results:

Download and install the portquery tool from MicroSoft

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo.../portqryui.exe

Navigate to the install folder and run the PortqryUI.exe program

In the 'destination IP' box, enter the Hostname or ipaddress of the Ventrilo server

Under "Query Type" select 'Manually input query ports:'
In the 'Ports to query' box enter the port number for the Ventrilo server
In the 'Protocol' box select BOTH

Click the 'Query' button

The display will report one of the following results:

UDP port #### (unknown service): LISTENING or FILTERED
UDP port #### (unknown service): NOT LISTENING

well, glad to here it's working but i'm in wonder that you're able to connect. the portquery is only to test the connection but in your case it must have triggered something to allow the UDP packets thru.

Prog-Rocker 07-06-2011 12:01 AM

@ inie1

what does the vent window display before hitting connect? MSG: ????

what results do you get from the tracert and telnet tests described here:
http://forum.ventrilo.com/showthread.php?t=35567

Inie1 07-06-2011 12:16 AM

msg: contacting server

you will have to forgive me i cant post what i got on the tracert and i cant get the telnet to work

p.s. i can log on to one server but not the other one i use.

Prog-Rocker 07-06-2011 12:34 AM

i just tried the status page http://ventrilo.com/status.php and a telnet to the server info you posted and was unable to get a response.

either you have the wrong ipaddress or port#, or the server is offline.

Prog-Rocker 07-06-2011 12:38 AM

looks like your DNS cache is out of date

try this ipaddress for the server: 216.6.236.10

Inie1 07-06-2011 12:44 AM

try that one for the tracer?

Prog-Rocker 07-06-2011 12:45 AM

just enter that ipaddress in the vent client > server setup instead of V32.darkstarllc.com

Inie1 07-06-2011 12:48 AM

i could connect but couldn't authenticate

i know the server is up my brother is on it along with some friends of ours

Prog-Rocker 07-06-2011 12:51 AM

for authentication you will need to contact a server admin and have them check your permissions.

passwords are case-sensitive

Inie1 07-06-2011 12:52 AM

i dont know a server admin on that server you linked me but i am one of the admins on server i cant contact

should i have one of them delete my account from the server and i can recreate it?

Inie1 07-06-2011 12:57 AM

I had them delete my account and it started working ty

PS if you ever make it to the oregon coast ill hook you up with some fresh fish i love you man

Your right... it temporarily allowed me to get in vent last night, I went to quickly check it this morning and same problem has crept back up again... MSG: Contacting Server :@

I did another port Query

sorry, i was under the impression the portquery allowed the connection again.

but it looks like there's something else interfering. let's see if we can figure out what's going on.

download and run this utility then copy/paste the results from the log:

thx for the info.

i don't like suggesting this but temporarily uninstall AVG as it has been known to unintentionally block connections. reboot after the uninstall to make sure there's not any stubs still running. then check the vent connection. if this works then we just need to determine how to configure AVG to allow vent.

be sure to write down your license number

i'm going to install AVG on my win7 laptop to get familiar with it.

It's only the free Anti-Virus... surely it's just a virus scanner nothing else? Cant see why it'd interfere with vent's connection... Especially since I know plenty of other people who use both. But I'll give it a go can't do any harm.

Is this normal? Settings in Windows Firewall.

I am having this issue as well. I have tried everything short of a full system restore. Vent is not wanting to connect for me. I've tried the advice posted on this thread, and still nothing. Any other advice on how to fix this?
