Mac user in an IBM world

Help!

I'm the only Mac user in a guild of around 73 players. There Vent client is set up for GSM 6.10 and this current version of Vent for mac only allows connection through Speex.

Getting them to change over to Speex is gonna happan as much as an Enchanter is handing out free Crusader enchants in Ironforge.

Please please please tell me what I can do so I can at the minimum, listen in on what there saying. I don't need to talk back at this time but If I can't get this Vent to work with them, there not going to allow me to join in on future MC or any other instance raids.

I'm desperate here. When is the next version of Vent coming out and will it allow me to connect using the Codex GSM 6.10? If not, then what else can I do?

Thanks,

Wylar

Flagship has not indicated whether the next version will include any additional codecs. If it does not and your guild is unwilling to change, there's nothing you can do.

why did they give mac the different codec? Just more problems.....

Alternate ways

I've heard a mention somewhere about someone running a program on the Mac called "Virutal PC" or something like that which allows the Mac to run IBM software so you can then run the Vent software through that. Yes, No? Will it work?

No, it won't work.

Why does your guild refuse to change? Other than downloading a new client (which Windows users do frequently anyway) it has zero effect on them. Lots of guilds are using Speex now and are completely happy with the voice quality and having their Mac users online too.

Why would your guild not want to make a 5-minute change to allow everyone to play?

Show me how

Wellllll..... Hmmm. When you put it that way it seems so simple to switch.

Can you direct me to simple instructions on how to go about it or just give me a step by step instructions on how to do it. I've seen somewhere in these forums a link to a patch the IBM users need to download but not sure what there to do with it when they get it. I am just a Mac user ya know. ;)

I then can find out who set Vent up for our guild, give them the information on what to do, and hope the 72 or more IBM users are willing to do as you suggest.

I appreciate your help and an all giddy if this can actually take place. (tired of being yell at, "Get Vent Working!") /sigh

Steps:

1) Whomever has administrative rights to the server changes the codec to Speex. Only two lines need to be changed.

See:
http://www.ventrilo.com/forums/showp...75&postcount=4

For the list of codec settings.

Our guild uses setting 3/20 and it sounds fantastic.

2) Server is restarted by same person.

3) Windows users download and install the latest 2.3.2 beta (currently 2.3.2 beta 3). They can find it at:

http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php

It's at the bottom of the page. They install it the same way they've installed every other Ventrilo update on thier machine (i.e. they run the installer).

Most customers do not have access to change the CODEC their host uses. Using different codec usually changes the price on your package. ie.. Regular quality verse High Quality.
It's not as easy as you make it sound, unless you're the administrator of the physical machine, and have root acccess to change the properties of the .ini files. 99% of users are not going to have that kind of access.

Sure they do. You may not have access to change it yourself, but it generally only requires contacting the hosting company's tech support.

No, it doesn't. As long as you pick equivalent settings, it should not make any difference. If a hosting company claims it does, then they're not being ethical.

Say Amen

My guild had no issue about changing over to using Speex. After the first time I logged on it was kinda special and all. Really felt like one of the group now.

Thanks so much Wade!
